Gas facility of 170 million Euro to be functional in 2017

Electrocentrale Bucuresti (Elcen) the thermo energy producer in Romania and the Japanese group Marubeni Corporation signed an agreement for establishing a mixed company to build a gas-based plant at Fantanele, in Mures county, following an investment of 170 million Euro.

The facility will become functional in 2017, a release of Elcen states. The new company will be called Fantanele Gas Power and it will be owned by the Japanese shareholder with 90 per cent of shares while 10 per cent will be owned by Electrocentrale Bucuresti. The gas facility will deliver a capacity of 250 MW and the newly created company will function as independent energy producer.

The installed power within Electrocentrale Bucureşti S.A. capacities was at the beginning of the 2010 of 2,008 MW, which is 20 per cent out of the generation capacities at national level, as it is the main thermal and power producer in the thermal generation sector.

In 2009, the company generated 4.392 billion kWh electrical energy, meaning about 7.5 per cent of the production obtained at the national level, a quantity which was sufficient for 47 per cent of the Romanian population consumption. In the above mentioned period, the company also generated 6.302 million Gcal, representing about 40 per cent of the national output.

Elcen established in December 2002 as subsidiary of Termoelectrica and it is owned by the Ministry of Economy, through energy Department. In 2013, Elcen posted a turnover of 1.7 billion lei (380 million Euro) and a net profit of 51 million lei (11.7 million Euro).
