Hypermarket, supermarket and cash & carry chains open 1,500 units amid economic turmoil

In the six years since the economic slump began, the Romanian retail market has undergone an extremely difficult and challenging episode, though the decline of consumption and sales has been offset by the aggressive expansion of hypermarket and supermarket networks.

The main trends on the local market were the vanishing of some retailers, especially Romanian ones, a 10 percent drop in sales, the consolidation of other networks, new formats and targets, a boom in private labels, and the gradual replacement of traditional trade by modern retail in 2013.
