Romania to receive at least 61 million Euro from EP for border security

2014-04-05 16:40:16 - From the Print Edition

The European Parliament (EP) approved in mid-March an allocation of 2.6 billion Euro over 2014-2020 to secure the external borders of the European Union (EU), with Romania set to receive at least 61 million Euro, according to Mediafax. "We must increase our external border security," said PDL MEP Marian-Jean Marinescu. "The conflicts and tensions near the EU make this a key objective. We have introduced common criteria for assessing the level of border security, an industry first. They will allow the harmonization of systems and procedures at the borders of Member States." Moreover, Marinescu added that the common evaluation criteria would eliminate disparities between Member States′ borders and prevent new Member States that have beefed up their borders in order to be accepted into the Schengen Area from exceeding the security level of the old Member States.
