President's daughter stands alone in EU vote

Elena Basescu, the youngest daughter of President Traian Basescu, will run as an independent candidate in the Euro-Parliamentary (EP) elections this June.

April 2009 - From the Print Edition

The 28 year-old had planned to be on the Democratic Liberals (PD-L) list of candidates, because she held the position of elected leader of the Democratic Liberal Youth.
Following harsh criticism in the press and public for taking advantage of her father’s position to gain a top position on the party list, Elena Basescu has decided to leave the party behind and let the people decide her fitness for office.
Meanwhile Elena Basescu resigned from the PD-L and has stated that if she wins the EP elections, she will return to the party. She is currently employed in an 8,000 Euro per month salary for lighting firm Luxten and works part-time at the office of PD-L MEP Monica Iacob-Ridzi in Strasbourg. She graduated in 2004 in economic relations from the private university Universitatea Romano-Americana. Over the last three months, she has felt victimised by a vicious press hungry to paint her as a selfish opportunist. “I do not come from Troy, but from Dorobanti,” she recently said on a TV talk-show, citing the fashionable district of Bucharest where she lives. “I am Elena of Dorobanti.”
The President’s daughter has appointed her older sister Ioana as head of her electoral campaign.
Elena Basescu’s ambition is not the first example of a Romanian political dynasty forming around the European Parliament. Current Minister of Agriculture Ilie Sarbu’s daughter Daciana is also a member of the European Parliament, while her husband Victor Ponta is Minister for the Government’s Relations with Parliament.
