Romania's energy consumption inches up, says Statistics Institute

Available energy resources reached 44.45 million tonnes of oil equivalent (toe) in 2011, an increase of 0.5 per cent (208,000 toe) compared to 2010, mainly due to a 2.9 per cent increase in imports (331,000 toe), according to the National Statistics Institute (INS). In 2011, the 27.5 million toe primary energy production slightly increased by 0.1 per cent (representing 37,000 toe) and continued to maintain a significant share (61.8 per cent) of total energy resources. The INS also says that the lowering of hydropower production was offset by an increase of coal and natural gas production, by 758,000 toe and 19,000 toe, respectively. In addition, 2011's energy imports slightly increased by 2.9 per cent (331,000 toe) compared to 2010, totaling 11.57 million toe.
In terms of the total imports of energy products, INS said natural gas imports account for only 21.5 per cent, while oil imports make up 47.1 per cent of total imports. The final energy consumption in 2011 remained at the same level as in 2010, with an increase of 10.7 per cent posted in the agricultural and forestry field and four per cent in the transport sector. Besides that, energy exports increased 2.7 per cent on 2010, reaching 4.163 million toe, according to the same INS data.
