Tonny Lybek, IMF: Romania posts progress in reforms, still way for improvement

The chief of Romanian office of International Monetary Fund (IMF), Tonny Lybek stated today that Romania advanced with the reforming process in order to meet the steps agreed with IMF but, according to the representative, “the glass is half way full and Romania still has to work on the reforms.”

The official reminded several of Romanian progresses, as the sustainable advance of financial distortions, the favorable evolution of inflation, the stable banking system or the aligned interest rates. The negative aspects stated by Lybek point to the Romanian authorities which should use more the potential of the country and should improve the efficiency of public sector. Also, Lubek said that the budget deficit keps being a problem and it should be kept under control, targeting the latest years’ measures regarding the increase of salaries and pensions. “It is difficult to take back the increases of salaries and pensions already formulated starting 2008 but at least, Romania should keep an eye on the matter in order to control, the deficit,” Lubek stated within a conference of Financial Times held at Bucharest.
