Roma child death rate four times Romanian average

February 2011 - From the Print Edition

The mortality rate among Roma children in Romania is four times higher than the national average, according to a new report on Roma inclusion in Children′s Early Development Services (IRSDTC), sponsored by the Open Society, Roma Education Fund and UNICEF.
In Romania Roma life expectancy is 64 years old - six years lower than for the Romanian average. Many Roma suffer from poor health due to poverty, bad sanitation, lack of access to medical services, social marginalisation, malnutrition and discrimination. Around 80 per cent of children who do not attend school are Roma, compared to around ten per cent of Romania′s population who are Roma. Almost one fifth of Roma do not have any kind of formal education.
Meanwhile early education between nought and six years reaches one in every two Romanian children, but only 20 per cent of Roma, according to a 2007 Open Society report. The major issue is to secure adequate housing as a base for further development, according to the European Roma Rights Center (ERRC).
“Many Roma have told the ERRC that without a roof over their heads it is very difficult for their children to attend and complete school,” said Rob Kusher, ERCC executive director.
