Craiova mayor accused of bribe-taking and forgery

Democratic Liberal Party (PDL) mayor of Craiova Antonie Solomon has been suspended from office following accusations by anti-corruption prosecutors of bribe-taking and forgery. Between February 2006 and November 2006, Solomon allegedly received 50,000 Euro bribe from the main shareholder of Pic supermarket chain, Cornel Penescu, to issue an illegal construction permit for a hypermarket in Craiova. Deputy Mayor Marinica Dinca is replacing Solomon during this period of suspension. Solomon, who was arrested for 29 days, has declared he is innocent, while PDL leaders have announced they will discuss his possible party suspension.
